Six Must Haves for Spring

One of the many hats I wear is a personal shopper and wardrobe stylist. Since I am always in the process of cleaning out my closet and assessing what I really need, I thought I would share this list for  Six Spring Must Haves with you. This year it's all about streamlining and shopping smart. At least that's my mantra for now.

The Statement Necklace

The best Spring investment as far as I'm concerned is a great necklace or piece of jewelry. It can be worn every day, always fits and usually yields more compliments than any item of clothing. This season its about statement pieces that take risks and dress up an outfit. Pick one that speaks to you and has a bold style.

The Nude Heel

If you don't already have a nude-ish heel in your closet than you are missing out on a big fashion workhorse. Not only do they create the illusion of legs that go on for decades, but they look elegant and springy with everything from bright colored dresses to white pants. Unfortunately, some of the cheaper versions are made with an icky leather that looks like those comfort sneakers nurses wear. Be sure to look for a pair in suede, patent leather or snakeskin will help to avoid that strange, fleshy tone. Chunky sandals in a neutral tone will work too.

The Tulip Skirt

The tulip skirt is a great new silhouette that looks fresh for spring. It somehow manages to conceal wide hips while creating a tailored waist. They key is to find one that isn't too snug, hits above the knee, and has an interesting print. You will be amazed at how this chic look goes from work to cocktail in a snap. Extra points for pockets!

The T- Shirt Dress

I cannot emphasise the importance of a great simple dress enough. When it comes to the warmer months, its just a no brain-er that you would want the simplicity of a tee shirt in dress form. Its so easy to dress it up or down. I even have a few tank dresses that I layer under sparkly dresses for a more casual look. The look has a rocker edge when it's not too snug, highlighting what you add to it- accessories, cardigans and structured jackets.

The Boyfriend Jean

It seems that the trend in denim is slowly migrating away from the skinny jean. While the pencil thin leg is still a relevant shape, a look that is more current and comfortable is the Boyfriend jean. They are best when beaten up as if you've spent weeks working in the field or on the railroad (you know, the usual.), and then paired with some fab heels or top for an unexpected twist. Roll the bottoms up to keep the silhouette dainty and chic.

The Printed.. Anything

One big mistake most people make is stocking up on basics like tees and jeans and forgoing the special "impulse" buys. Remember that if you don't have a few fun things you love, then you'll end up with a closet full of nothing to wear. Indulge in a few special pieces that speak to you and make you stand out. A sign of a truly stylish lady is one that isn't afraid of prints and spring is the time to celebrate that artful side. I love when I see someone in a bright Orla Keily coat that seemingly doesn't match with anything she's wearing. Sometimes impulse buys end up being the pieces you are really passionate about and thus withstand the test of time. A splashy scarf or a printed sundress is a a good, recession-friendly way to add spice to your wardrobe.
